The De las Vueltas River belongs to the basin of the Santa Cruz River. An important portion of the water of the De las Vueltas River is of glacial origin, partly from the melting of the glaciers in the Northern area of the Los Glaciares National Park. It is born in Lake of the Desert at an altitude of 506 meters above sea level and flows into Lake Viedma at an altitude of 250 meters above sea level. The section that is navigated is 16 km long, which due to its characteristics is class III to III + in rafting.
The adventure starts at the Fitz Roy Rafting base of operations in El Chaltén (475 Lago del Desierto Avenue). The guides deliver the technical and safety equipment required for the activity, and you walk together 50 meters to the boarding area. On the De las Vueltas River’s banks, they conduct a technical and safety talk that includes instructions on how to hold the paddles and move forward, turn, and move backward so that the entire team rows in unison. The river’s first section has calm water and meanders, providing stunning views of Mount Fitz Roy and the nearby mountains. Enjoy traveling for about 6 km through areas of the Andean Forest on your way to the steppe. Birds (including condors, upland geese, buff-necked ibis, among many others) and native wildlife (foxes, armadillos, and guanacos) are frequently seen. You can contemplate the scenery, practice rowing, and learn safety procedures during this leg of the journey. The river is enclosed in a natural canyon on the second 10-kilometer leg of the trip, producing 20 rapids ranging in class from III to III+. It is approximately a two-hour navigation journey through the De las Vueltas River, including time to contemplate and enjoy a good dose of action and adrenaline. A comforting snack (hot drink and something tasty to eat) is offered when you disembark. A vehicle awaits on the Provincial Route 23 bridge to return to the operating base.
