DAY 2

Enjoying Estancia Cristina

After breakfast, your day is free to explore the estancia on your own, relax and see the incredible landscapes, or take any of the activities available:

UPSALA GLACIER LOOKOUT POINT:
We will head off in a 4×4 vehicle for 9.5 kms, climbing through the Feruglio mountain range to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking Glaciar Upsala’s former domain. We will contemplate the signs of time left behind and witness how the glaciers scrape the earth and leave their tracks as they recede, leaving exposed countless marine fossils along a deep-red canyon called Cañadón de Los Fósiles.

UPSALA GLACIER LOOKOUT POINT + SOUTH PATAGONIAN ICE FIELD
We will cross Río Caterina and head northwest, ascending the Feruglio mountain range. Once we leave the native forest behind, we will begin a challenging hike to reach the breathtaking views of Glaciar Upsala and Lago Guillermo. Another favorite on our expedition is the massive Cordillera de Los Andes, featuring the peaks of Bertrand, Cono, and Murralon.
Our return will be along a different trail, during which we will continue to discover new landscapes.

CRISTINA LOOKOUT POINT
We will head northwest and stroll through woods of ñires and lengas to identify the native vegetation in the Patagonian steppe. At our first stop, we will find the valley extending from Lago Argentino to Lago Pearson. Then, we will keep ascending until we get to Cascada de Los Perros and, finally, the Mirador Cristina: a stunning view of the mountains, the Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur, and Glaciar Upsala.
Continuing, a pleasant slope towards the east will lead us to Lago Tanhausser. As we reach the Andean meadow over Cerro Cuchillo’s slopes, we will gain a panoramic lookout of Río Caterina’s valley and the mountains embracing its amplitude.
As a last delight, and after surpassing a rock edge that glaciers couldn’t erode, we will see Lago Tanhausser and the glaciers descending from the hills of Cerro Pintado, Sombrero, and Masters to end in the lake.

CERRO CARNERO
As we follow the path used by the Masters family for cattle raising, we will take in the beauty of Lago Argentino and ascend gradually to appreciate Canal Cristina, the main lodge of the Estancia, and a complete view of the valley.

Once we cross the forest and ice-melting waterfalls, we will reach Cerro Carnero and gain a complete view of the valley and the lavish Cordillera de Los Andes with the glaciers cradling it.

Our return will be along a different path, bordering the Canal Cristina and finally arriving at the Estancia.

HORSEBACK RIDING TO CRISTINA LOOKOUT POINT AND TANHAUSER LAGOON
We will meet at the Monturero to head northwest, riding through forests of ñires and lengas and becoming familiar with the typical vegetation of the Patagonian steppe. At our first stop, we will be able to see the valley from Lago Argentino to Lago Pearson. We’ll keep ascending, passing Cascada de Los Perros and continuing on to Mirador Cristina, where we will have a panoramic view of the surrounding hills, the Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur, and Glaciar Upsala. From here, we will hike to Lago Tanhausser, following the trail eastward. We make our way through the high vegetation and across the high Andean meadow over Cerro Cuchillo’s slopes, to be greeted by a dramatic scene of Río Caterina’s valley and the mountains embracing its amplitude. As a last delight, and after surpassing a rock edge that even glaciers couldn’t erode, we will see Lago Tanhausser and the glaciers descending from the hills of Cerro Pintado, Sombrero, and Masters into the lake. Finally, we return to the Cristina lookout point to mount our horses and ride back to the Estancia.

Weight limit for riding:
Please respectfully note that we have a riding weight limit of 15stone / 95kg / 210lbs.

FISHING AT RIO CATERINA
Fishermen who visit us have access to the sacred headwaters of the mighty Río Caterina, where the king salmon is widely considered the fisherman’s ultimate dream. From the end of December through mid-April, massive amounts of King salmon run upriver, and from January to mid-March, the sheer number and size of fish are spectacular.
