Patagonia is one of my favorite places. I always say, “you have to go to Patagonia once a year,” and of course, for an Argentine, this is possible. But for a foreign visitor, the opportunity to visit this remote region of the planet may arise during their trip through the southern region of South America. And of course, within Patagonia, on the Chilean side in this case, there is a wonderful place that should be included in any itinerary. This is Torres del Paine National Park, and once there, let me suggest a unique place: Tierra Patagonia. Travel to the end of the world to be amazed by Torres del Paine National Park, among ancient forests, turquoise lakes, icebergs, and legendary mountains. And choose Tierra Patagonia, an accommodation with unique luxury, blending seamlessly with the surroundings on the shores of Lake Sarmiento. Crafted and developed with exquisite design and privileged views, this hotel offers a unique combination of adventure and spa experiences that will leave you with a lasting memory.
A bit more about Torres del Paine and Tierra Patagonia
Chilean Patagonia boasts native heritage dating back thousands of years, renowned for its pioneering exploration and spectacular landscapes. In southern Patagonia lies Torres del Paine National Park, with its iconic peaks, mirror-like lagoons, and vast glaciers, as well as endless hiking trails, adrenaline-filled outdoor sports, and a rich cultural heritage. From Sir Francis Drake and Lady Florence Dixie to Charles Darwin, many have passed through these lands, and few have wanted to leave.
Patagonia spans over 400,000 square miles (approximately 1,000,000 sq km), with rugged canyons and deep mountain lakes at the southernmost tip of the earth, with Torres del Paine National Park occupying 700 square miles (1,814 sq km) of those landscapes. Amidst a carpet of lush pine and lenga forests, Torres del Paine is home to four massive glaciers: Grey, Pingo, Francés, and Dickson, all surrounded by picturesque glacial lakes and rocky formations. Chilean Patagonia is generally more mountainous than its neighboring Argentine Patagonia and boasts three iconic peaks, the Torres, among the most famous.
Torres del Paine National Park is covered by various species of native plants and wildlife. Rows of beech, lenga, and coihue trees fill the forests, while shrubs such as notro, canelo, and chilco or fuchsia accompany the trails and grow freely on the plains. Orchids, lilies, and lupines hug the riverbanks and accentuate the colors of the forests, blooming during the warmer months along with many other naturally growing herbs. The park also hosts local fauna, with over 100 species of birds, 30 different mammals, reptiles, and countless varieties of insects. Some of the most well-known residents include huge condors, ostriches, Patagonian gray foxes, hawks, eagles, lizards, flamingos, and frogs, among many others.
Birdwatching and horseback riding are highlights of any itinerary and are among the most well-known adventure activities at Tierra Patagonia. You can marvel at amazing views, bird nesting sites, and natural habitats, which will be easy to explore in the company of our expert local guides.

Mirador Cuernos del Paine
Cuernos is by far one of the best options to see the heart of the park, with a gentle 2-hour hike and the magnificence of the Cuernos and Paine Grande peaks. These unique geological formations in the world captivate the eyes of those who visit Torres del Paine National Park.
From the hotel, we will travel 50 minutes to the beginning of the trail. Then we walk towards Salto Grande with its beautiful turquoise color, to continue to the final viewpoint from where you can admire Lake Nordenskjöld, the second largest in the park, and the view of the French Valley.
Sierra Baguales
Leaving the hotel, we head towards Sierra Baguales, northeast of the park and near the border with Argentina. The landscape here is completely different from the Paine Massif, and the geology is impressive. We walk along the banks of the Baguales River, searching for fossils and enjoying these remote lands and the views of this almost entirely unexplored valley. At the end of the hike, our driver awaits us to return to the hotel.
Laguna Azul
Laguna Azul is the best alternative to see the Towers from the park’s finest viewpoints. We will visit a lagoon with an incredible intense blue color, surrounded by a small wetland that boasts a wide variety of bird species. Then, we continue towards the rushing Paine Waterfall, fed by glacial waters, the main water tributary in the park. Finally, we will explore the surroundings of a beautiful and greenish Laguna Amarga with high pH, rich in stromatolites, where – if luck is on our side – we may spot flamingos.
Grey Bridges
Embark on a challenging 21 km hike, lasting approximately 12 to 14 hours. This demanding excursion offers an active alternative to observe the Grey Glacier from a different perspective, from the top of hanging bridges. Starting with a 1 hour and 50 minute transfer to the Grey sector, our journey begins with a scenic 1-hour navigation to the north side of the lake, where we will start our hike.
The initial stage involves a 1.5-hour uphill hike heading north, offering stunning views of the glacier. Crossing lenga forests and hanging bridges, we will enjoy unparalleled views of one of the most remarkable glaciers in the Southern Ice Fields. We will return to the starting point after 3 hours of hiking, take a break to enjoy a delicious boxed lunch, and then hike another 13.5 km towards Paine Grande Lodge. Here, a 30-minute catamaran ride awaits us across Lake Pehoé, followed by a 50-minute van ride back to the hotel.
*During April, the schedule for this excursion is from 07:00 to 20:30.
Valle del Frances
We will begin this part of the W trail by leaving the hotel heading towards Pudeto. Here, we will board a catamaran to cross Lake Pehoé towards Paine Grande, where our journey to the French Valley begins. We will walk along the Paine Grande mountain on a narrow, rocky trail, with plenty of roots and small walkways to avoid mud, from where we will catch sight of two beautiful lakes with views of the Cuernos.
After 7 kilometers, we will reach the bridge that crosses the French River and begin to ascend through a forest, where we can appreciate the hanging glacier of the same name that falls into Paine Grande. If the pace of the hike and the weather allow, we will continue ascending on the trail for another hour, passing through lenga and coihue forests, moraines, and waterfalls until we reach the “Plató” viewpoint, where we will have lunch with unique views of the imposing Paine Grande and the beautiful rock formations in front of us.
We will return along the same trail and then take a detour to continue towards the Catamaran and cross Lake Pehoé to return to the hotel.
*During April, the schedule for this excursion is from 08:30 to 20:30.
Base de las Torres
This route is a legend among hikers or an eye-opening experience for those who enjoy walking, as it is one of the best treks in the world. The first part is a steep ascent following the natural course of the Ascensio River up to Paso de los Vientos, where there is sparse vegetation. As you ascend, the views change, and the mountains appear. After walking a good stretch along a steep, rugged slope, you reach the “Chileno” refuge. Crossing the river, the trail is shaded, and there is a change of pace through the native forest. Then, the terrain changes again, and a steep rocky slope opens up, with large stones that are challenging to walk on. All the effort of this ascent is rewarded with the view of the Towers and their famous magnificence. Take some time to appreciate the solitude and grandeur of these mountains, a place that has a perspective of its own.
Note: Although this excursion does not require advanced technical skills, it does require a good level of physical fitness.
Paso D´Agostini
This one-day hike along Paso de Agostini is a lesser-known route, away from the crowds, with the iconic Paine Massif as the backdrop. Starting from Estancia Lazo, we begin our adventure at Laguna Verde, which, as the name suggests, is a stretch of open green waters where we start this scenic hike.
We meander through the lenga forest until we reach a series of viewpoints, with panoramic views of lakes and mountains. We will stop for lunch along the way in a tranquil and natural setting, always keeping an eye out for the surrounding wildlife, depending on the season. As we progress, there is a short ascent of approximately 10 minutes that takes us to a viewpoint where we can see the largest lake in the area, Lake Toro, as well as the winding Paine River and imposing mountains on the horizon.
The hike ends with a fairly steep descent to Puente Weber, where the van is waiting to take us back to Tierra.
Horseback Riding Estancia Lazo
If you love nature and horseback riding, or if you’ve always wanted to give it a try, there’s no better place to do it than in this marvel called Torres del Paine, with local gauchos at Estancia Lazo. The ranch is located on the southern shore of Lake Sarmiento, after a beautiful journey across the lake from Tierra Patagonia.
At the ranch, we will meet our horses and saddle up to begin our adventure, riding through different terrains and a glorious landscape. During the first hour, we will ride through an ancient lenga forest before reaching a clearing that offers stunning views of the Paine Massif. With these views of the most iconic peaks in Torres del Paine National Park, you’ll feel inspired, and they will remain a cherished memory for a long time to come.
