ITINERARY

The experience begins at Estancia 25 de Mayo with a brief technical talk. After gearing up with helmets and chaps, the 12 km horseback ride starts, taking you through the scenic Cañadón del arroyo Calafate. As you ride through streams and ancient geological formations, you’ll be sheltered from the wind while gradually gaining elevation. The journey offers breathtaking views of Patagonia’s vast landscapes.

After about 1.5 hours of riding, you’ll arrive at Cueva del arroyo. Here, a traditional gaucho lunch awaits, including a delicious picada, Bifes a la criolla, cheesecake, and a celebratory wine toast. After relaxing, you’ll begin the return ride back to Estancia 25 de Mayo, completing this unforgettable 4-hour adventure.

FAQs

What is the duration of the tour?

The tour lasts around 4 hours, with 3 hours of riding and a countryside lunch included.

What is the difficulty level?

This is a medium-difficulty horseback ride, ideal for riders with some prior experience.

What is the age requirement?

Participants must be at least 12 years old.

Are helmets and other safety equipment provided?

Helmets and other safety equipment are provided for your safety during the horseback riding portion of the tour.

Is horseback riding experience necessary?

Horseback riding experience is not necessary. The tour is suitable for beginners, and the guides will provide instructions to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Do I need previous horseback-riding experience?

Many scenic rides are suitable for beginners, but you should always declare your experience level when booking. Horses and pacing can then be matched more appropriately to the group.

How are horses assigned to riders?

Operators generally consider experience, confidence, size and the nature of the route when assigning horses. Final decisions are made by the local riding team.

Will the ride be fast or mostly at a walking pace?

The pace depends on terrain, group ability and safety conditions. Scenic Patagonia rides generally prioritize control and landscape enjoyment rather than speed.

What if I feel nervous once I am on the horse?

Tell the guide immediately. Guides can provide additional instruction, adjust your position in the group and help you ride more comfortably.

Is horseback riding comfortable for first-time riders?

Most beginners adapt quickly, although some muscle soreness afterward is normal. Relaxed posture and following the guide’s instructions make a significant difference.

Can weather change the riding route?

Yes. Wind, rain, snow, ground conditions or visibility may require route adjustments. Safety and animal welfare take priority over following a fixed path.

Is this activity suitable for travelers with back or knee problems?

Horseback riding can place stress on the back, hips and knees. Travelers with relevant conditions should consult a medical professional and ask the operator about suitability before booking.

Why is horseback riding a good way to experience Patagonia?

It connects the landscape with the region’s rural and gaucho traditions and can reach viewpoints or open terrain in a way that feels very different from traveling by vehicle.

Can I take photographs while riding?

Yes, but only when it is safe to do so. It is better to stop the horse or wait for a designated pause rather than handling a phone or camera while moving.

What happens if someone in the group is much more experienced than the others?

Guides normally keep the group at a pace appropriate to the least experienced riders. The priority is a safe shared experience rather than advanced riding.
