El Chaltén, nestled near the Chilean border, is Argentina’s hiking capital. Trekking in and around the village is one of the premier activities in Los Glaciares National Park. This guide covers top things to do, how to get around, where to stay, and the best times to visit.

Renowned worldwide as a trekking haven, El Chaltén draws adventurers and nature lovers from every continent. You may not have heard of it before planning your Patagonian trip, although it quickly becomes a must on any itinerary.

Most trailheads start in town, so you do not need to travel far to reach the mountains. You can choose from short day hikes or multi-day treks. Your choice depends on budget, fitness level, and appetite for adventure. While there are classic tourist activities such as biking or horseback riding, hiking is the star of the show. The jagged peaks above vibrant blue lakes are the main attraction, and missing them would be a shame. In town, you can also enjoy the lively outdoor vibe with a well-earned beer or steak.
