ITINERARY

2-day trekking to Cagliero Glacier

DAY 1

El Chaltén

We start at 9:00 am by picking you up from your hotel in our vehicle.
We transfer to the trailhead, located 17 km north of El Chaltén.
As we begin the trek, we quickly gain altitude through a forest of Lengas. From there, we continue through an open environment, where we’ll have many stops to observe the mountain ranges surrounding us, highlighting the Fitz Roy peak, the Bosque range, Cerro Vespignani, and Lake del Desierto to the south.
We start at 450 meters above sea level and ascend to 1250 meters above sea level (850 meters of positive elevation gain).
The duration of this part of the route will be approximately 4.30 hours, up to the highest point reached on the ridge descending from the summit of Loma del Diablo.
From here, depending on the participants’ physical conditions and the weather, you can choose to continue to the summit or begin the descent trek down the steep slope of the south face of Loma del Diablo, arriving at our Lake del Diablo campsite (800 meters above sea level) after approximately 2 hours of walking.
Once at the lake, we’ll enjoy a well-deserved rest at the camp.

Hiking time: 6:30 hours.
Distance: 12 km
Elevation gain: 850 m (maximum elevation gained in the day)
Meals: Box Lunch, Dinner
Accommodation: Camping (double base tent, sleeping bag, insulating mat)

DAY 2

Camp - Ice Trekking Cagliero Glacier - Loma del Diablo - El Chalten

After breakfast, we will set off once again through the forest until we begin to skirt around the Laguna del Diablo, over easy but uneven terrain, until we reach the beginning of the Via Ferrata. As we progress, the journey on the Via Ferrata becomes more entertaining, turning this part of the activity into an excursion in itself, and the views will improve as we gain altitude. It will take us approximately 1.30 hours to complete this section and reach the Glacier Viewpoint. From there, to the North, we can observe the unexplored South Cagliero Glacier, which for years remained alive thanks to its orientation and the accumulation of snow from the Neumayer, Cagliero, and Loma del Diablo peaks.

From the viewpoint, a short walk will take us to the front of the glacier, where the guides will equip us with crampons to begin the walk on the glacier itself. The average stay on the glacier is 2 hours, depending on the weather conditions and the group’s physical level.

After lunch on the glacier, we will make the return journey back to the campsite and from there, we will begin the return to Laguna Cóndor, following the route of the previous day, but this time with a smaller positive elevation gain.

Around 6:00 pm, we will reach Route 41 where a transfer will be waiting to take us to El Chaltén, where the activity will be concluded.

End of services.

Hiking time: 10:00 hours.
Distance: 9 km.
Elevation gain: 750 m (maximum elevation gained in the day)
Meals: Breakfast, Box Lunch
Accommodation: Not included

What is the difficulty level?

It´s a hard activity. While it is difficult to establish a system to determine who can do the excursion and who cannot, we recommend considering the duration of the activity in hours and the elevation gain (ascents and descents), and comparing these parameters with other activities you have done. A very good physical condition is necessary to enjoy this trekking, so we urge you to be critical and evaluate yourself conscientiously.
We recommend previous experience in trekking or camping activities as conditions in the high mountains can be variable. We consider it not advisable to take this trekking as a first introduction to the mountain. Although the entire activity is guided by our guides, previous experience will ensure enjoyment.
