El Calafate is a charming town located in the Patagonian region of Argentina, near the southern tip of South America. It’s renowned for being the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, home to the famous Perito Moreno Glacier. This glacier is one of the few in the world that is still advancing, making it a spectacular sight for visitors. El Calafate itself offers a range of amenities for tourists, including hotels, restaurants serving delicious Argentine cuisine, and shops selling local handicrafts. The town is also a hub for outdoor activities such as trekking, horseback riding, and boat tours, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the stunning natural beauty of the Patagonian landscape.
After breakfast, we will start the excursion to one of the most amazing places in Patagonia: The incredible Perito Moreno Glacier.
The excursion to Perito Moreno Glacier from hotels in El Calafate is a highlight for visitors to Patagonia. Typically, the excursion starts with a scenic drive from El Calafate to Los Glaciares National Park, which takes about 1.5 to 2 hours.
Upon arrival at the park, visitors are greeted by stunning views of the towering Andes mountains and the turquoise waters of Lake Argentino. The excursion usually includes a stop at the designated viewing platforms near the glacier, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the glacier’s massive ice wall.
Visitors can also enjoy guided walks along the well-maintained wooden walkways that provide close-up views of the glacier and its impressive ice formations. Many tours offer the opportunity to witness the glacier calving, where huge chunks of ice break off and crash into the water below with a thunderous roar.
Some excursions may also include additional activities such as boat tours that allow visitors to sail closer to the glacier, providing unique perspectives and photo opportunities. Additionally, adventurous travelers may have the option to participate in ice trekking tours, where they can actually walk on the surface of the glacier accompanied by experienced guides.
After breakfast, we will enjoy a new wonderful full day boat navigation in the Argentino Lake.
