Enjoying the Perito Moreno Glacier: The Catwalks
Watching the Perito Moreno Glacier from the catwalks is a must, since it offers a close encounter with one of nature’s most magnificent sights. The trails, carefully constructed to provide safe viewing platforms, offer sweeping views of the glacier’s massive ice walls and the surrounding landscape.
The glacier spans approximately 250 square kilometers and rises to around 70 meters above the surface of Lake Argentino. Its towering ice walls, streaked with shades of blue and white, create a mesmerizing scene against the Andean mountains.
From the catwalks, visitors may witness dramatic movements and hear echoes of cracking ice. Sometimes, chunks of ice break off and crash into the turquoise waters below, a phenomenon known as calving. Multiple vantage points allow visitors to admire the glacier from different angles while taking in the pristine surroundings.

Minitrekking: walk on the Perito Moreno Glacier
Embark on an exhilarating adventure with the famous Minitrekking activity. Starting from the Bajo de las Sombras port, you will cross Lake Rico and trek along the lakeshore for approximately 35 minutes until you reach the glacier’s edge. Equipped with crampons, explore the glacier’s surface for about 1.5 hours, marveling at ice formations and learning about local glaciology and the phenomenon that leads to its rupture.
The excursion begins at the port, located 7 km before the catwalks. After a ~20-minute navigation in front of the southern wall, groups of up to 20 people are organized at the refuge. Guides fit crampons and provide safety instructions before stepping onto the ice.
The hike is moderate. The surface is uneven yet firm and safe. During ~1 hour 30 minutes on the glacier, you will see crevasses, seracs, moulins, and small lagoons. The return follows a Magellanic forest trail back to the refuge, then a catamaran ride to the port.
Boat navigation at Perito Moreno Glacier
Choose a short boat navigation for captivating views of icebergs and calving along the southern face. This excursion lasts about 1 hour, perfect for photos and close-up perspectives.
Nautical Safari
Departing from Bajo de las Sombras, the Nautical Safari sails the Rico Arm of Lake Argentino, offering spectacular views of the glacier’s imposing southern face. Expect intricate ice patterns, striking blues, and occasional calving events.
Moreno Spirit
The Moreno Spirit offers a more intimate experience with limited capacity and personalized service. Departing near the Glacier Viewpoint, it provides panoramic vistas and expert commentary on geology, ecology, and regional history. Onboard amenities typically include spacious viewing decks and comfortable seating for a relaxing cruise.
Kayaking at Perito Moreno Glacier
For kayak enthusiasts, the Perito Moreno Kayak Experience combines time on the catwalks with a guided paddle from Los Templanos beach. No prior experience is required. After a safety briefing and gear fitting, you will paddle facing the glacier, stop for photos, and learn facts about the area from expert guides.
Big Ice Trekking on Perito Moreno Glacier
For an even more adventurous option, the Big Ice Trekking includes a guided visit to the catwalks, a boat crossing of the Brazo Rico, and a small-group hike led by mountain guides across the southern moraine. After gearing up with crampons, harnesses, and helmets, you will spend about 3.5 hours on the ice exploring blue lagoons, deep crevasses, moulins, and ice caves.
Guides help you understand the glacier and its surroundings while you enjoy views of nearby peaks such as Dos Picos, Pietrobelli, and Cervantes. A short lunch stop on the ice is typically included. The return follows the moraine back to the boat, with a close sail along the south face before heading back to the port.
