What attracts visitors to El Chaltén?

First and foremost, trekking. It’s at the heart of the El Chaltén experience. Visitors can enjoy short hikes, such as the trail to Laguna Capri, or take on more challenging routes, like the trek to Laguna de los Tres or Laguna Torre, which offer breathtaking views of Mount Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre.

There are also other experiences, such as exploring the Patagonian landscapes on horseback, which provides a special connection with nature and allows access to more remote spots.

Kayaking in the crystal-clear waters of rivers and lagoons like the Río de las Vueltas offers a unique perspective of the surroundings. Kayaking activities are available for those who wish to enjoy this.

In addition to being a tourist destination, El Chaltén is an ideal place to reflect on the importance of conservation, as much of its appeal lies in the pristine nature that surrounds it.

Additionally, the village’s population has grown in response to increasing tourism. From just 41 inhabitants in 1991, El Chaltén’s population rose to over 1,000 by 2012. This growth reflects the village’s expanding infrastructure to accommodate the rising number of tourists.

While exact figures for El Chaltén are not readily available, the regional data and local developments suggest that the village welcomes a significant number of visitors annually, contributing to its reputation as a key destination for outdoor enthusiasts in Patagonia.

How many people visit El Chaltén annually, according to official sources?

The Government of Santa Cruz reported, through the Economic Observatory of Tourism (OET), that approximately 1,125,000 people visited the province during 2022. According to the information, El Chaltén remains firmly established as the second most visited locality, accounting for 21% of that total.

According to official sources, approximately 236,250 people visit El Chaltén annually. This figure represents 21% of the 1,125,000 total visitors to the province of Santa Cruz in 2022 and the number if growing

This report also highlights an average stay of 4 nights per visitor and indicates that 73% of visitors were domestic tourists, representing an 80% increase compared to 2019, driven by the various editions of the PREVIAJE program, promoted by the Ministry of Tourism and Sports of the Nation.

Regarding the origin of visitors, domestic tourists primarily came from the province of Buenos Aires, the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires, Santa Fe, and Córdoba. Among international visitors, the most notable origins were Brazil, the United States, France, Spain, and Mexico.

Finally, it is noted that this information comes from systematic records by the provincial Observatory based on visits to National Parks in Santa Cruz, hotel occupancy surveys conducted in eight localities, and tourist profile studies, which showed that tourist activity in every month of 2022 exceeded the numbers from 2019.
