OVERVIEW

Discover one of the most iconic trekking routes in El Chaltén on a full-day guided hike to Laguna de los Tres, located at the foot of the impressive Mount Fitz Roy.

The adventure begins with a transfer to Río Eléctrico Bridge, approximately 20 km north of El Chaltén. From there, the trail leads through native lenga and ñire forests, passing the Piedras Blancas Glacier Viewpoint, Poincenot Camp, and Río Blanco Camp.

The most challenging section is the final ascent to Laguna de los Tres, which involves approximately 500 meters of elevation gain in one hour. Those who complete the climb are rewarded with spectacular views of the Fitz Roy Massif, its surrounding peaks, and glaciers.

The return follows a different trail, passing the Laguna Capri Viewpoint before reaching El Chaltén.

The complete trekking route covers approximately 23 km, with 800 meters of cumulative elevation gain. Although no technical climbing experience is required, the hike involves moderate to high physical exertion and is recommended for travelers in good physical condition.

ITINERARY

Your adventure begins with hotel pick-up in El Chaltén between 7:30 AM and 9:00 AM. The exact pick-up time will be reconfirmed the day before the excursion.

From El Chaltén, travel approximately 20 km north to Río Eléctrico Bridge, where the trekking route begins. After crossing a pedestrian bridge near the Río Blanco, the trail continues through a beautiful forest of native lenga and ñire trees, following gently undulating terrain.

After approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes of hiking, you will reach the Piedras Blancas Glacier Viewpoint, the first major panoramic stop of the day. Here, you can enjoy views of the glacier and surrounding mountain landscapes.

The hike continues toward Poincenot Camp, followed by Río Blanco Camp, a base frequently used by mountaineering expeditions. Along the way, the landscape opens up to impressive views of the Fitz Roy Massif and its granite peaks.

From Río Blanco, hikers with sufficient physical fitness can undertake the most demanding section of the trek: the final ascent to Laguna de los Tres. This steep climb involves approximately 500 meters of elevation gain over about one additional hour, following rocky and uneven mountain terrain.

Upon reaching Laguna de los Tres, you will be rewarded with spectacular panoramic views of Mount Fitz Roy, its surrounding peaks, and nearby glaciers. The breathtaking mountain scenery makes this one of the most memorable viewpoints in Patagonia.

After a break to rest, enjoy lunch, and take photographs, the return hike follows a different route through the Laguna Capri Viewpoint, offering additional perspectives of the Fitz Roy Massif and the surrounding valleys.

The excursion concludes with the return to El Chaltén, usually between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

The complete hike covers approximately 23 km, with 800 meters of cumulative elevation gain, and requires moderate to high physical effort. The total duration is approximately 9 hours, depending on the group’s pace and trail conditions.

What Should I Wear and Bring for This Hike?

Wear comfortable, layered clothing, a waterproof jacket, and sturdy trekking shoes or hiking boots with good grip and ankle support. Bring a small backpack with sufficient drinking water, a lunch box, sunscreen, sunglasses, and additional warm clothing. Weather conditions in Patagonia can change rapidly, so proper equipment is essential.

How long is the hike to Laguna de los Tres?

Allow approximately 9 hours for the full excursion, including the initial transfer, hiking, and breaks. The route covers approximately 23 km, with around 800 meters of cumulative elevation gain.

The total duration may vary depending on the group’s pace, weather, and trail conditions.

What is the best time to do the hike?

November to March generally offers more favorable conditions for this trek, although wind, rain, and sudden temperature changes are possible throughout the season.

Departures depend on weather and trail conditions. Snow, ice, or National Park restrictions may affect availability or require changes to the route, including the final ascent to Laguna de los Tres.

How technical is the hiking terrain?

The route is primarily a trekking experience rather than technical mountaineering, but Patagonian trails can be uneven, muddy, rocky, steep, or exposed to wind. Good balance and confidence on natural terrain are important.

How should I judge whether my fitness level is sufficient?

You should be comfortable hiking for several hours on uneven terrain, with sustained climbs and descents. The complete route covers approximately 23 km and includes around 800 meters of cumulative elevation gain.

The most demanding section is the steep final ascent to Laguna de los Tres. Participation in this section depends on your physical condition and the guide’s assessment of weather and trail safety.

Is the trail suitable for travelers who are afraid of heights?

Most trekking routes are not designed as exposed climbing routes, but some viewpoints or slopes can feel open. Travelers with a strong fear of heights should review the specific route profile before booking.

What happens if the weather changes during the hike?

Guides continuously assess wind, rain, snow and trail conditions. The pace, stops or route may be adjusted when needed, and safety always takes priority over reaching a specific viewpoint.

Will I have time to stop for photographs?

Yes, but the guide must balance photo stops with the group’s pace and the day’s schedule. Keeping your camera or phone easily accessible helps you take advantage of short stops without delaying the group.

Are trekking poles useful?

They can be very helpful on uneven ground, descents, muddy sections or windy days. Whether they are essential depends on the route and your personal comfort.

Is this trek a good option for solo travelers?

Yes. Guided treks are popular with solo travelers because they provide structure, local knowledge and the opportunity to share the experience with other visitors.

How much water should I carry?

Carry enough water for the expected hiking time and weather, while avoiding an unnecessarily heavy backpack. Exact needs vary by route and season, so follow the operator’s pre-tour guidance.

Can I do another demanding activity the following day?

Many travelers can, but it depends on your fitness and how your body responds. If you are planning several demanding Patagonia hikes, alternating harder and easier days can make the trip more enjoyable.

What makes guided trekking valuable compared with hiking alone?

A guide adds route knowledge, weather judgment, safety support, natural and cultural interpretation, and pacing. This can be especially useful in Patagonia, where conditions can change rapidly.
