This full-day experience takes you from El Chaltén to the remote and scenic Lago del Desierto, located 36 km north along the picturesque Route 41. The journey itself is part of the adventure, following the Río de las Vueltas valley with views of forests, rivers, waterfalls, and distant glaciers.
Once at Punta Sur, you will have time to explore the area at your own pace through self-guided hiking trails. The experience is designed to be flexible, allowing you to enjoy nature independently while choosing optional upgrades such as a scenic boat navigation or the Vespignani Glacier trekking circuit.

Your day begins with departure from El Chaltén, traveling north along Route 41 toward Lago del Desierto. The route follows the Río de las Vueltas valley, offering multiple scenic viewpoints along the way, including forests, waterfalls, and distant views of Mount Fitz Roy.
After approximately 1.5 hours, you will arrive at Punta Sur, the main access point to Lago del Desierto. From here, you can begin your self-guided hike, following a trail of approximately 4 km with a 220-meter elevation gain. The hike takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes and is considered low to moderate difficulty. You may also choose to walk toward the Huemul Glacier viewpoint, located within a private reserve (entrance included depending on the selected option).
During your time at the lake, you can enhance your experience with optional activities. A scenic navigation across Lago del Desierto allows you to admire the Vespignani Glacier and surrounding landscapes from the water. Alternatively, you can upgrade to the Vespignani trekking experience, which includes a short navigation followed by access to a network of marked trails with varying difficulty levels, ranging from easy interpretive walks to more demanding climbs with panoramic glacier views.
After free time to explore the area and complete your chosen activities, you will return to El Chaltén along the same scenic route.
